MORE RAVE REVIEWS ABOUT OUR PROGRAMS

Here's what some of our members have to say about the quality training they have received from the coaches at Pennsylvania Combat Sports.

Dustin no-gi 1st
"Casey Leonard was the Coach of CGS where I got my start in Jiu-Jitsu around 2002. I competed after about 2 months training, against students of a Black Belt from Brazil! I took Gold in 2 seperate divisions that day.

I trained with CGS for 3 years before moving to the west coast, the Meca for BJJ. In that time I competed every month or so, I got all my fundamentals from Casey and Team CGS. Casey inspired me to do somthing I didn't know I possessed & is a great mentor. He never held back his knowledge which is hard to find.

Dustin mma win
I'm a Jiu-Jitsu instructor at a Undisputed in San Diego, CA under Master Baret Yoshida now, I've been with Baret since 2006. Casey gave me the skills and inspired me to take the steps to continue training once I moved to California.

Our doors are open here At Undisputed to the Pennsylvania Combat Sports crew, from The west coast family to the east coast family, see you on the MAT!"

Justin

"My name is Justin Scalzo, and I have been employed as a police officer for the past 10 years. I have 15 years experience in martial arts, and have competed in boxing as well as amateur kickboxing. I started training with Casey Leonard in 2007, at his school Combative Grappling Systems, and then most recent at his new school Pennsylvania Combat Sports. I have found that his training methods and techniques he teaches are second to none. The techniques I have learned through training with Casey have benefited me in my career as a police officer, and have found them very effective, when involved in any close combat situation, where a suspect I was trying to take into custody was actively fighting with police and resisting arrest. I would recommend training with Casey and his instructors at his school Pennsylvania Combat Sports to anyone in law enforcement, or just the average person looking to get in better shape, or learn self defense."

Police Officer

Jimmy

"I've known Casey since I started training. Besides being an awesome fighter himself, he built up one of the best teams in the region. His students have a great attitude and work ethic. The instruction is likewise top-notch at Casey's school. They train the right way. I enjoy working out with them."

Pacs trio anthony"Training with Casey and PA Combat Sports has dramatically improved my level of fitness. In just a few months, I lost 17 pounds and shaved 6% from my bodyfat percentage.

Prior to training with Casey, I had no jiu-jitsu or wrestling experience. But after training for a few months I achieved my first submission in competition from my back. I also won third place in my division.

If you are dedicated and focused, the possibilities at PA Combat Sports are endless."

"I'm 35 years old and I have been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for about 6 months at Pennsylvania Combat Sports (PACS). I have to admit when I started training I was a little nervous. I was not sure I would be accepted and because I had no prior training experience I was worried that I would become the "whipping boy" that everyone would beat up on during training. Nothing could be further from the truth. Casey Leonard, my instructor, made me feel welcome right from the start. He works with all students in order for them to get the most of their training and pushes them to do their best. I consider the rest of the members of PACS as one big family. Everyone works together to help each other out and train hard. Through training, I have regained a confidence in myself that has been missing for a long time.

When I first started I was not sure how long I would stick with training. Six months later I'm addicted to the sport and in the best shape I have been in for a long time. I have become motivated both in and out of the gym. I look forward to everyday that I can go train. In fact I'm going to start training no gi in February. I plan on continuing to train at PACS for many years to come."

"I believe one of the most important things I've learned at PACS is that you are not alone, you have a team, a family, helping you the entire time, not only in the gym but in my personal life too. There are many things I have went through that without having this support behind me, I could've been in a totally different place then I am now."

Finding the Right School...

Many people in the area have considered martial arts training, but few know where to begin.
Here is a checklist of things you should look for in a reputable Martial Arts school.

1. What style do they teach and is it effective?

ANSWER: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts training are currently taught to ALL members of the US Army (Combatives Program) and Marine Corps. Its universally accepted that a blend of Boxing, Muay Thai Kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are the key ingredients to a successful REAL WORLD Martial Arts program.

2. Are the Instructors Qualified to teach?

ANSWER: This is very important! If the trainers are not experts in their art, then you could be entering into a dangerous situation. What rank do they have in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? Where did THEY train? How long have THEY been training? Have THEY ever competed in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Mixed Martial Arts? If these answers are unclear its best to look else where.

3. Have they created any champions?

ANSWER: This may be a trick question but its a good one to ask. The key element is this. Have they ever taken a person off the street, with ZERO wrestling and ZERO previous Martial Arts experience and turned them into a champion competitor in national or world class events?

4. What is the condition of the facilities?

ANSWER: The quality of training is not always determined by the structure that its in. BUT you want to know that your training in a safe, healthy environment don't you? It also lets you know what kind of value the owners put on their gym. If they pocket all of the students membership fee's while letting the gym fall apart, it only hurts you the student, who has to train on substandard or broken down equipment.

5. What are you paying for?

ANSWER: This is an issue of cost vs. value isn't it? Nobody walks on to the lot of a Mercedes dealership and expects to pay Kia prices. The same goes for your martial arts training. You think your getting a deal with a bargain price gym membership only to find that the guy who is teaching you is barely qualified and is really wasting your time, money and potentially risking your safety!

6. Do they offer introductory programs for new students?

ANSWER: Many gyms just throw the new students into the mix from day one, with a "sink or swim" mentality. That is no way to teach a person with zero experience, and it could cause undue injury. A basis in the foundational elements is needed for growth in any martial art.

7. What is their curriculum based on?

ANSWER: First, ask if they offer a curriculum. Many schools do not have one! When we started Kindergarten, our learning was conducted by way of a curriculum (all the way through college) and your martial arts training should be no different.

8. How long have they operated in Westmoreland County?

ANSWER: Finding a school that has taught the same style in the same area can be tough sometimes. Many traditional martial arts schools have now switched over to calling themselves "MMA" or "BJJ" schools in hopes of banking on the popularity.

 McdojoNowMMA
Heres some good news....The premier Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA Training Center in Greensburg is now accepting new students for its Introductory classes. These classes are designed to teach beginners the foundation they NEED to be successful, on the street, in competition or just at life in general!

The Year MMA Came to Greensburg Pennsylvania...

To understand the story behind Pennsylvania Combat Sports, you have to go back 10 years. When a small Quonset building in South Greensburg would become the first place to teach MMA in all of Westmoreland County. Prior to 2001, there were no martial arts schools offering MMA or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training in Greensburg, or the surrounding communities of Westmoreland County.

This would all change when Casey Leonard would return back to Pennsylvania after serving in the US Marine Corps. Coming back to Greensburg after living and training in Southern California, Casey soon realized that the explosive popularity of MMA and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academies in California, had not yet reached this part of Pennsylvania.

In 2000, a chance encounter with Mac Danzig would put a series of events into motion that no one would have anticipated at the time. As a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Casey took Mac under his wing and spent several nights a week teaching him the fundamentals of a sport that few locals knew anything about. With no prior wrestling or martial arts experience Mac was learning everything for the first time.

From these early days of training on a borrowed 10 x10 folding mat, the creation of Combative Grappling Systems (TEAM CGS) would soon occur. After only one year of training, and having won several grappling tournaments and the US National Amateur MMA Championships in Iowa, it was time for Mac to pursue full-time training opportunities in Los Angeles. (Mac would later become a Gladiator Challenge/ King of the Cage 155 Champion, The Ultimate Fighter Season 6 winner and active UFC Fighter in the 155 Division)

CGS would continue as the home of MMA and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Westmoreland County, creating many more success stories along the way. One such story would start in 2002, when Dustin Thornton would arrive on the scene. Having no experience in wrestling or any previous martial arts, Casey would turn him into a NAGA (Known to host the largest grappling tournaments in the country) WORLD Champion in 2003! The decision to train full-time also led Dustin to seek opportunities in California. where he is now a head trainer at UND1SPUTED (Point Loma) and pupil under Master Baret Yoshida.

Fast forward to 2005 when Casey Leonard sets his sights on a new goal, to become the All Army Combatives Champion! This historic event would be the first time in over 200 years that our US ARMY would seek to determine who the best fighters truly were. All components of the Army, to include Army Reserves, and National Guard were asked to send their best fighters to compete in this 2 day event held at Ft. Benning, Georgia. Representing 19th Special Forces Group in West Virginia, Casey would accept the challenge. After two long days of competing against the best fighters in the Army, he was able to capture the 155lb Army title in an MMA match that would last only 90 seconds!

Moving into 2009, the development of something truly great would be on the horizon. The idea of Pennsylvania Combat Sports was conceived, with the goal of creating a training facility unlike anything in Western Pennsylvania. Located in the heart of Greensburg, Pennsylvania Combat Sports would be calling home a massive 15,000 sqft property just 2 blocks from the courthouse!

Creating champions has become habit over the years, as our students continue to dominate the competition. For us, winning is truly the RULE and not the exception.

Contact us to receive more information on how we can make you a champion on the mat, in the cage, or at life!
